speak their names

2022

The biggest challenge of touring theatre is to keep things lean so Speak Their Names also made use of a very minimal set to convey a writer’s garret in Triora, that is changed with lighting to go back 400 years in time, to a forest outside the village.

Another challenge of Speak Their Names was how to create a fire effect on stage - with misters,  halogen bulbs and a portable power source concealed inside the stove.

west side story

december 2019

For the International School of Nice’s production of West Side Story Doc’s iconic café was created on one side of the stage, whilst Maria’s bedroom took up the other. The back wall of the bedroom rotated to reveal the bridal shop. Complete with fencing, fire escapes and staircases, this  ambitious set was built by the student technical team, led by Ron Booth.

Expertise gained during production of A Man Like You came in handy when blood was spilt again on stage during the rumble in which Riff and Bernardo are killed.

constellations

june 2018

In keeping with its theme of parallel universes the natural order of things was subverted for the set of Constellations. Luminous stars scattered over the floor symbolised constellations shrunk billions of times, whilst the walls, covered in hexagons, became the inside of a honeycomb magnified billions of times.

a man like you

2016 - 2018

In A Man Like You the bleakness and claustrophobia of a windowless concrete room in Somalia had to co-exist on stage with a luxury residence in Nairobi. It was achieved with props; a rickety bed, a chair recycled from an old lawnmower, a set of custom-made iron manacles and a retractable knife, for the Somali room; antique rugs, silver picture frames and a comfortable armchair for the Nairobi one. Touring A Man Like You around the world brought the special challenge of making it all fit into several suitcases.

Another challenge was the extensive use of blood that had to appear on stage during the play. A blood bomb sewn into the actor's shirt had a tie attached to it that released the blood at the moment of stabbing.
